Why Does CBD Change Color?

CBD oil is a popular product that many people use for its potential health benefits. However, some users may notice that their CBD oil changes color over time. Why does this happen, and what does it mean?

One possible reason for CBD oil changing color is the type of carrier oil it is mixed with. Carrier oils are used to dilute the CBD extract and enhance its absorption into the body. Some common carrier oils are MCT, hemp seed, olive, and grape seed.

MCT oil, derived from coconut or palm kernel oil, is a clear or slightly yellow liquid with a long shelf life. However, MCT oil contains a plant enzyme called polyphenol oxidase, which can react with oxygen and light and turn pink. This is similar to how an apple turns brown when exposed to air. This color change does not affect the quality or potency of the CBD oil, and it is actually a sign of a pure and natural product.

Hemp seed oil, which is cold-pressed from hemp seeds, has a golden brown color that can darken over time. Hemp seed oil contains chlorophyll, which is a green pigment that gives plants their color. Chlorophyll can degrade when exposed to light or heat, resulting in a darker or reddish hue. This color change does not affect the quality or potency of the CBD oil either, and it is actually a sign of a full-spectrum product that contains other beneficial compounds from the hemp plant.

Olive oil and grape seed oil are also commonly used as carrier oils for CBD products. Olive oil has a slight golden color that can vary depending on the type and quality of the olives used. Grape seed oil has a clear or pale green color that can also vary depending on the type and quality of the grapes used. Both oils can change color over time due to oxidation, which is a natural process that occurs when oils are exposed to air. Oxidation can cause oils to become rancid, which can affect their taste and smell. However, this does not necessarily mean that the CBD oil has gone bad, as long as it is stored properly in a cool and dark place.

Another possible reason for CBD oil changing color is the extraction method used to obtain the CBD extract. Extraction methods are techniques that use solvents or pressure to separate the CBD and other cannabinoids from the hemp plant material. Some common extraction methods are CO2 extraction, ethanol extraction, and butane extraction.

CO2 extraction uses pressurized carbon dioxide to extract CBD and other compounds from the hemp plant. This method produces a pure and potent CBD extract that has a clear or amber color. However, CO2 extraction can also cause some minor changes in the color of the CBD extract over time due to oxidation or exposure to light.

Ethanol extraction uses ethanol (alcohol) as a solvent to extract CBD and other compounds from the hemp plant. This method produces a full-spectrum CBD extract that contains chlorophyll and other plant pigments that give it a dark green or brown color. Ethanol extraction can also cause some changes in the color of the CBD extract over time due to evaporation or degradation of the ethanol or other compounds.

Butane extraction uses butane (a flammable gas) as a solvent to extract CBD and other compounds from the hemp plant. This method produces a highly concentrated CBD extract that has a clear or yellow color. However, butane extraction can also cause some changes in the color of the CBD extract over time due to residual butane or other contaminants that may be present in the final product.

In conclusion, CBD oil can change color for various reasons depending on the type of carrier oil, the extraction method, and the storage conditions. These color changes do not necessarily mean that the CBD oil has gone bad or lost its effectiveness, as long as it is made from high-quality ingredients and stored properly. However, if you notice any significant changes in your CBD oil’s smell, taste, or texture, you may want to discard it and buy a new one from a reputable source like Lea Black Beauty. Thank you for the explanation. My toner I purchased was a different color than it usually was when I received it. It was a dark pink. The writing on the bottle was also coming off on my hand when I would pick it up. I just figured it was a defective bottle. I trusted the contents though and kept using it.
